Culturefest: A Time of Unity and Connection

On Saturday, September 12, I had the privilege of attending Culturefest, the Mercer County Grassroot District’s annual festival celebrating music, arts, and community. Presented by the Princeton-based nonprofit RiffRaff Arts Collective, this free festival brought storytelling and cultural experiences into the community. Culturefest featured over 30 music and dance performers, unique artisan and retail vendors, workshops, children’s activities, healing arts, and opportunities to explore the vibrant venues and businesses throughout the downtown district of Princeton, West Virginia.
The festival featured artists and performers ranging from internationally to locally known groups with music styles including Appalachian folk, African drumming, world fusion, soul, and so much more.
While attending the event, I spoke with Lori McKinney, the event’s organizer, who said that Culturefest has “a lot of intention behind it.” She said that the event is about “creating a space for human connection through music and art.”
“I love seeing people coming together and working hard to make Culturefest an incredible event for everyone,” said Jillian Firth, visual artist. “I love seeing the smiles on all the faces.”
Several venues were provided for many different artists to showcase their talent. Whether someone would want to be outside and dance to vibrant music, sip coffee and listen to soulful tunes, or simply just admire local artists’ work displayed at multiple locations, Culturefest has an outlet for all peoples and ages.
This being Culturefest’s third year only on Mercer Street, McKinney expressed that families and local businesses are starting to get more involved.
“If you discover this community,” said McKinney, “there are ways to be involved in a reoccurring way.”
I was able to spend the day hearing groups that I’ve loved and known for years, but I was also able to discover so many new artists and people that I hope to see again in the coming years. Culturefest is a great place to come and connect with the local community through artistic expression, good food, and music. I would encourage anyone who is interested and in the area to see this incredible event for themselves during next year’s festival.
