Bluefield University men’s volleyball team took the court for Senior Day, celebrating both the final home match of the season and a heartfelt farewell to their lone senior, Kemani Riley. The Dome buzzed with excitement as fans and family gathered to support the Rams in a day filled with emotion and competition.
The first match proved challenging for the Rams as they faced Life University, resulting in a straight-set loss. Bluefield struggled to find its rhythm, totaling 28 kills and hitting .197 as a team. Despite their efforts, the Rams couldn’t overcome Life’s powerful attack, which registered an impressive hitting percentage of .526.
After a quick regroup, the Rams returned with a commanding performance in their second match against Truett McConnell, sweeping the game in straight sets. Kari Williams led the surge with 13 kills, while Mason Lloyd added seven. In his final home match, Kemani Riley contributed seven kills and two blocks, leaving a lasting impression.
Prior to Saturday’s finale, Riley was honored by friends and family for his accomplishments during his time at BU. The middle hitter from the Virgin Islands is studying sports management and aspires to become a volleyball coach in his hometown after graduation. He expressed that being the only senior was “shocking yet fun” since the day was solely dedicated to him. Riley also shared that his favorite part of representing the Rams was the annual trip the team took to Florida.
Fortunately for Riley, the Rams will travel to Babson Park, Florida, to face St. Thomas, closing out the regular season before the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament begins.
Senior Day concluded with mixed emotions, a tough loss softened by a passionate victory and a heartfelt farewell. Riley hopes the team can carry the energy from the final home match into the tournament, aiming for a deep postseason run.
