At Bluefield University, Moriah Mingo is making goals both on and off the field. Part of the women’s soccer team and Bluefield University Student Ministries, Mingo is an active presence at BU. She also leads a discipleship group called “The Dojo,” named after her father’s book.
“I would say that God led me to BU,” said Mingo. “Our former coach spotted me at a tournament game in San Diego, which my team got added to last minute. He reached out, and everything progressed from there.”
Soccer is a large part of Mingo’s life. Mingo considers playing the sport a personal achievement of hers, one that she had to overcome many obstacles to be able to achieve.
“I consider playing college soccer at all an achievement, considering how much I got injured during high school. From my freshman year to my senior, I was injured pretty severely five separate times, and the fact that I continued to play and fight to be on a college team is something that I’m proud of,” states Mingo.
Mingo also considers the discipleship group she formed through Bluefield University Student Ministries one of her personal achievements.
“Since I’ve been here, doing The Dojo is an achievement I’m proud of,” said Mingo. “It brings fulfillment to my life, and I’m proud of how I get to serve the Lord through it.”
Ministry is not just a hobby or a passion for Mingo; it’s part of her plans after she leaves Bluefield. Mingo is tailoring her college education around the skills she will need for her future career of ministry.
“My major is Interdisciplinary Studies, which I chose because it allows me to have a holistic education—psychology, business, and communications. I plan to do ministry when I graduate and felt that this degree would help me in that endeavor,” stated Mingo.
Reflecting on what she loves about Bluefield, Mingo says the people are what makes BU special.
“The thing I love most about BU is the people. The people that work here, whether they are in administration or are professors, truly want you to succeed and are genuinely loving,” said Mingo.
After completing her degree at BU, Mingo plans to stay in the region.
“After BU, I want to move to Tennessee and pursue ministry work,” said Mingo. “I would also like to start businesses that partner with women’s shelters and rehabilitation programs. And I would like to coach soccer one day.”
Mingo is no stranger to overcoming obstacles on and off the field, and the BU community wishes her the very best in tackling her future.
