How to Make your Dorm Feel Like Home

Business and Communication • 2024

It does not matter if you are a freshman or a senior in college. Living in a dorm has many challenges. You may miss home, especially if you are an international student and do not get the chance to go home many times a year. It is hard to make your dorm feel like home. This article will give you tips to make your space look bigger, brighter, and more comfortable.

1. Make sure your bed is comfortable.

College beds do not have comfortable beds. The mattresses are hard and lumpy. Because you will be using your bed not just for sleeping but for doing homework, lounging, and hanging out with your friends, you want it to be as comfortable as possible. For your bed to become comfortable, you need to create layers. The best option is to buy a quality mattress topper, at least 3 inches, with comfortable sheets and find the biggest, softest, and most comfortable pillows.

2. Decorate your walls with everything and everyone you love.

The walls in your new room are not the prettiest color and they are void of color. You can decorate your wall with everything you love: family photos, friends, pets, inspirational quotes, and artistc tapestries. Put everything on the walls that will make you happy and feel more at home.

3. Keep things organized.

Living in a small space and sharing it with another person can be challenging if you are not organized. Use wicker baskets, under-bed storage containers, and rolling storage bins to keep everything off the floor and easy to find when rushing out the door for class.

4. Add light.

The rooms only have a central light, which is often not the best. Adding one or two light fixtures will make your room brighter, bringing lighter and clearer air. That can help a lot, especially in winter when the days are shorter.

5. Add little plants.

Plants like mini cacti and succulents are a perfect option for your room. In addition to bringing an air of more life, they are straightforward to care for during busy days.

6. Invest in fluffy rugs.

Most dorms have cold tiled floors or old carpeting. A rug is a great option to cover the floor. It keeps the room warmer and adds an air of personality.

It does not matter if you live in a dormitory, a fraternity, or an apartment. Your bedroom has to be your sanctuary, as it can affect how you feel and function academically and socially.
