College Student Essentials

Communication • 2024

Just what are the essential items you need to make college life easier and more convenient? We asked that question and provided the answer in this College Student Essentials list. Even if you have been in college for a few semesters, it’s never too late to buy items that will make your life easier. Of course, this is an excellent list for first-year college students, as well. All of these items have been recommended by current and former college students.

Kitchenware

  1. Hydroflask (water bottle)

A Hydroflask (or any water bottle of your choice) is essential for any college student. Some days will be so busy that you will not have time to stop and get a drink from the campus café or store, and it will be a lifesaver to already have ice-cold water or any beverage with you.

2. Ramen Cooker

Most college students do not have a lot of money to go out all the time and eat at restaurants, or sometimes they can’t make it to the cafeteria during open hours, so ramen is always in a student’s dorm room because it is tasty but cheap and easily accessible. Therefore, a ramen cooker makes making that little pack of noodles quick and easy.

3. Throw away cups, plates, and utensils.

I know that we all think we need to buy reusable plastic plates, cups, and utensils because it comes out cheaper and better for the planet. However, being a college student in the dorms means having limited sink space. Also, being a college student means being busy all the time, and when you finally have some free time, washing dishes is the last thing you want to do

Electronics

  1. Portable Charger

Of course, there are outlets around campus, but that doesn’t mean they are always available. Because of this, it is always nice to have a backup. Portable chargers let you charge any device, anywhere. Portable charges are also quite affordable, and the battery life lasts significantly depending on how many devices you charge.

2. MacBook, tablets, etc.

Some laptop that is easy to store in a backpack or bag is a must. MacBooks are a favorite among college students as they are easy to use and connect to their iPhones, but any laptop or tablet you prefer is fine. However, if you get a tablet, get a keyboard with it as it is easier to type up essays and assignments.

3. Floor-Standing Fan

When it comes to some dorms, they aren’t the best with the consistency of heat and air conditioner. You can always bundle up and add layers when it’s cold, but there’s only so much you can do when it gets too hot. Having a floor-standing fan is very convenient on those hot days.

Room Necessities

  1. Twin XL Mattress Topper

A dorm room can be uncomfortable initially, but you can make it comfier faster if you have a thicker mattress topper. Getting at least a two-inch mattress topper is recommended for ultimate comfort.

2. Laundry basket that is easy to pack around.

Most of the time, the laundry room is far away from your dorm room, so it would be easier if your laundry basket had wheels, or a strap that makes it easier to carry.

3. Command Strips

Almost all dorms do not allow nails, tacks, screws, etc., to hang up any items on the walls. Therefore, command strips are the best options as they are easy to stick on just about any surface, come off easily, and don’t remove paint. Also, the command strip brand has a lot of accessories to hang up, such as hooks and shelves.
