Local Trail Spotlight: Natural Bridge State Park
Since Bluefield University is nestled in the majestic Appalachian Mountains, BU students have access to a variety of scenic outdoor sites and adventures.
Natural Bridge State Park is a must-see landmark located in central Virginia just off I-81. The park’s main feature is a 215-foot-tall arch shaped by Cedar Creek. The park also features a visitor center, gift shop, Monacan Indian settlement exhibit, and more than seven miles of trails on its impressive 1,540 acres of land.
Thomas Jefferson first bought the natural bridge land from King George III in 1774. Various private owners then owned the land until September 24, 2016, when it became a state park. Route 11 also runs across the bridge structure.
Aside from the natural bridge itself, the park has a handful of quick and easy trails. For more information on the trials, go to Alltrail.com.
At the end of the main trail that passes under the arch is the Monacan Indian Village. However, as of October 31, the exhibit is not open. This trial that passes under the bridge is relatively easy but the trail starts with a long and steep set of stairs. For those who may struggle with the climb, there is an accessibility shuttle upon request.
General admission is $9 per person but please visit the park’s website for additional information on pricing and operating hours.
