BU Music Department to Host Christmas at Bluefield Concert
The Bluefield University Department of Music will host its annual Christmas at Bluefield event on Saturday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Harman Chapel. A reception with hot cider, cookies and more holiday treats will follow in Shott Hall.
This event is the university’s way of “giving back to the community at Christmas time,” said music professor Dr. John Moir.
“To me, the songs the choir sings always evoke the wonder and mystery of God becoming a baby, and the nostalgia of the night makes me fondly remember my past professors at Bluefield and so many friends who have participated over the years,” said Music Department pianist and alumna Alandra Blume.
The concert will feature selections from six BU music ensembles, including Masterworks Chorale, Variations Chamber Singers, the concert band, the jazz band, the trombone quartet, and the chapel praise band.
“There will be a chance for the congregation to sing along at a couple places in the program,” Moir said. “It will be new and unusual music as well as traditional holiday favorites, and the concert will last about an hour and a half with an intermission in the middle and the reception to follow.”
“I believe this year will be fun for the performers and enjoyable for the audience hearing medleys and Christmas tunes from old TV shows and even the radio,” performer Jay Harris said.
Vocatio credit is available to students that attend the entire concert. The Music department plans to live stream the event.
“I greatly encourage everyone in the community to come out for this one-night-only concert,” performer Jeff Brannon said, “as to be filled with a sense of peace and comfort and joy that only Christ the Savior can bring.”
