BU Hosting Global Education Emphasis Week

Communication • 2022

March 21-25 is Global Education Emphasis Week at Bluefield University — a week that raises student awareness of international viewpoints with events, films, and speakers. Students can earn Vocatio credit at each Global Education Emphasis Week event.

“Our goal as the Global Education Committee is to expose the campus community to new ideas, perspectives, and ways of being,” said Dr. Maria Zalduondo, chair of the Global Education Committee.

The committee meets monthly to organize events that promote global attitudes and select speakers in the Fulbright Scholar program to invite to campus.

On Monday, Dr. Amanda Franco from Portugal will be speaking about her critical thinking research at 10 a.m. in the Chandler Boardroom (Lansdell 311). She will also speak about Portugal’s culture and history at 4 p.m. in the Lyceum (Science 302-303).

At 6 p.m. on Monday, the International Students Association is hosting the International Food Festival in the Lyceum.

“We hope to teach people about different cultures and ethnicities through a fun and enjoyable event,” said Pedro Ricardo, president of the International Students Association. “It is also a way to thank the Bluefield community for being so welcoming and open for international students.”

“Most countries represented on campus by students will be bringing their dishes,” added Llorenc Porquer, a member of the International Students Association.

Additionally, Monday is World Poetry Day, and students are invited to write on the “Poetry Wall” in front of the cafeteria.

On Tuesday, students are invited to read their favorite poems written by a female author at noon in the Student Center in recognition of Women’s History Month.

At 8 p.m. on Tuesday, the film Tolkien will be shown in the Lyceum, and refreshments will be available.

On Wednesday, Dr. Josh Pittman will be hosting “Fun with Global Arts and Crafts” at 6 p.m. in the Student Center.

Dr. Joe Saunders is hosting “Board Games from Around the Globe: Mancala, Chess, and Backgammon!” at 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Science 214.

The Theatre Department’s production of Philemon, set in third century Rome, will open at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in the Harman Chapel Auditorium. The musical is also showing at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26 and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 27. Admission is free for BU students, faculty, and staff.

Flyers about Global Education Emphasis Week have been placed around campus. Yellow and blue, the colors of the flyer and Ukraine’s flag, represent solidarity with the Ukrainians who have been displaced, lost their lives, and had their freedom threatened. Throughout the week, students are invited to write prayers and draw hearts for the Ukrainians on the white border of these flyers.
