Question of the Week: What are your thoughts about the new Canvas learning management system?

I would like to say I think the new Canvas system is an improvement from last year. I didn’t think I would like it at first but I had to give it a chance just like I did with the iPads. I like Canvas because it gives all students an easy list of what they need to turn in, it gives students an easy way to look up PowerPoints, and it’s very easy to use. I hope we stick to Canvas for the long run because it’s a good tool to have for college/university students.

For me, Canvas is a new learning system that is brand new. Back at home in Connecticut when I went for my associate’s (degree) before I came here, we had a similar environment with their online classes, and it worked out for my academic needs. With the start of a new chapter in my schooling, Canvas is a new online system that makes staying on time with classes even easier. With the classes that students are taking  presented in a tidy fashion that the user can simply just tap on it to access their assignments, the system is easy to navigate and submit assignments. Finally, with the “To-Do,” this tool is super handy, allowing students to be notified when assignments’ due dates are coming up so none can be missed.

Canvas is okay, but it’s definitely a transition from the Jenzabar application. The interface of Canvas is laid out nicely and makes everything easy to navigate. However, I miss MyBC. It was just the norm.

I have mixed thoughts about Canvas. Overall, I think it does a great job putting all the pieces of classes into a useful, cohesive structure, and I like how all the classes are shown in the same place. The inbox feature is handy, too, although I do not remember to check it as frequently as I do my Outlook email. However, I think Canvas still has some down sides, as I know professors and students have encountered frustrations with it connecting to Turnitin, being flexible with attendance, not showing messages, etc. I hope most of these are just glitches that will be solved. I’m not sold on Canvas yet, but I think over time, as people get used to it and bugs get worked out, it will be an equal or better learning system than MyBC.

I think that Canvas is a lot more user friendly than elearning was. The way that we are able to access classes (and) see grades and assignments makes the process of keeping up with things a lot smoother. However, I will say that a bunch of professors are having a difficult time getting the hang of this new system, and it’s proving to be the downfall of the whole switch. If the professors got a little more training on it I think it would be impeccable.
