BU Students Celebrate Halloween

Communication • 2022

How do you celebrate Halloween? Bluefield University students participated in a variety of activities leading up to October 31, including decorating pumpkins, watching spooky movies, and visiting haunted houses.

“For Halloween I usually watch the classic Halloween movies I watched as a child, such as: ‘Hocus Pocus’, ‘Halloweentown’, and ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’,” said Gabby Courtney. “Along with watching Halloween movies, I went to Carowinds (SCarowinds) for the first time with some friends the weekend before Halloween.”

Kiri Gilbert “watched ‘Twilight’, carved pumpkins, and watched ‘It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown’ and ‘Hocus Pocus’” with her friends.

In the weeks prior to Halloween, Easley Library held its annual Terrifying Tales Video Contest. The winning submission by Alysia Townsley can be viewed on the library’s Facebook page.

On Halloween night, Bluefield University Residence Life hosted its annual Boofield event.

“It consists of a three-story Haunted House in Lansdell (Hall), and for those who do not like or believe in Halloween, a harvest party in the Student Center with no spooky elements,” said Jess Smith, director of residence life. “We collaborate with (the Student Activities Leadership Team) and students in the Theater Department to make this event happen.”

The Harvest Party in Shott Hall featured pumpkin painting, a pie buffet, and a costume contest. Hannah Shockley and Tim Gasperson won best duo costumes as Wanda Maximoff and Captain America from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Laura Kimzey won best female costume as a hobbit from ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ Joshua McRae won best male costume as Medium Bird, “Big Bird’s disgruntled younger brother who couldn’t cut it on ‘Sesame Street’.”

Students could also smash a pumpkin in front of Shott Hall after grabbing one from the steps of Lansdell Hall.

“My favorite part was parking in front of Lansdell (Hall) to load and offload pumpkins,” said Antowyne Shaw, a student who volunteered as a chainsaw-touting clown for the Haunted House.

Michaela Jackson said, “All of the Halloween activities I participated in involved spending time making memories and laughing with my amazing friends.”
