Update 2.5

Graphic Communication • 2019

This update features a much-needed addition to the Rampage: a sidebar on all articles that displays various pieces of relevant information. It also rewrites a significant portion of the website to pave the way for future development and make it run more smoothly.

What’s New?

  • New Features
    • Sidebars Cards. All articles will now display a new and improved sidebar with information cards relating to the article. The sidebar is visible below the main article on mobile. Sidebar cards exist in three categories:
      • Author-added cards: Authors may choose to include an information card alongside their articles. As of now, only a text card option is available, but it is flexible, and other types of cards will be on their way in the future.
      • Category-specific cards: Some categories, such as reviews, include a category-specific sidebar card related to the article. For example, reviews display the final score of the item being reviewed and includes a spoiler tag. More post-specific cards may be added in future updates.
      • Meta cards: Appear on all articles with information about the author, any taxonomy the article is tagged with, and a short list of articles related to the current one. Some cards will not appear if no information is available.
  • Miscellaneous
    • A vast portion of the CSS under the hood was updated to make use of CSS variables across the website. Dark Mode should work more smoothly now and new features are more easily added in development.
    • Many links across the site have been updated to reflect the related category’s color on hover or click.
    • Placeholder images on the post feed now toggle between dark and light modes.
    • Some colors have been refined alongside the shift to the new system for color-management.
    • Adjusted the display of mobile index cards.
    • Adjusted the display of poetry index cards.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed an issue with the second card not displaying information correctly.
    • All images across the website now display in a higher resolution.
  • Known Issues
    • Tag pages need formatting (as do category pages—they’ll be ready soon).
    • It’s been brought to my attention that the Author pages have been neglected and need work. They’ll be updated soon.
    • Sidebar card options are found below the article in the Gutenburg editor. The fields are intended to be placed in the “Document” sidebar in the editor, but due to a bug, they have been moved until the issue is resolved.

What’s Next?

We like to be transparent on what features we’re working on next and their statuses. While these may not have set “release dates,” you can expect most of them to release within the next few months. If you have any suggestions for new features or updates you would like to see, let us know! Email us at editor@bcrampage.com or leave a comment below.

Our current resident web developer (yours truly) will be passing the website into new hands before the end of this academic year. It’s been a pleasure serving, designing, and developing this wonderful hub for student news over the last year. Clara Blevins will be taking its reigns once I leave, but The Rampage will need a new assistant web developer to learn the ropes during the 2020-2021 year and take over fully in Fall 2021. If you are interested in learning about web design and/or development, contact editor@bcrampage.com for more information about the role. The Rampage needs you!

The rest of the “What’s Next?” list has been moved to the sidebar. It’s new. Why don’t you check it out?
