New Fitness Center Available on Campus

Communication and Theatre • 2020

A strength and cardio fitness center is now located in the Student Activities Center Annex behind Shott Hall, bringing fitness facilities on campus and closer to students.

“Our contract with the City of Bluefield Recreational Center recently expired,” said Josh Arnold, associate vice president of Student Development, “which provided us with the opportunity to consider relocating our fitness facilities on campus to better serve students.”

The grand opening of the fitness center was Wednesday, September 26, and the facility is now open to all students, faculty and staff from 5 a.m to 11 p.m every day.

The cardio equipment in the center includes four treadmills; four ellipticals; two adaptive motion trainers, which allow for movement similar to an elliptical, stair climber or glider; two lateral trainers; two peloton cycles with subscription content that allows users to select various spin classes or scenic rides; a traditional recumbent bike for those with limited range of motion; and a Jacob’s Ladder cardio device.

The strength equipment includes a functional trainer, a converging bench press, a diverging row station, a leg extension machine, and a set of adjustable dumbbells from five to 90 lbs.

And while the fitness center does replace space that was previously used for student organization meetings and activities, Arnold said he’s confident students will find the space they need for those activities in other areas on campus.

“My hope is that students are still able to enjoy all of the same services and activities previously offered in the Annex across campus,” said Arnold, “while having access to fitness services in a much more convenient on-campus location.”

Before using the fitness center, students must first sign a liability waiver through the Office of Student Engagement.
