BC Takes Student Activities Online and Outdoors

Communication • 2021

In a pandemic world with social distancing restrictions, Bluefield College’s Office of Student Engagement has been working hard this semester to plan student activities that are safe, yet entertaining for students.

Anne Pelchar, BC’s director of student engagement, has described her semester as “exciting” and full of “new changes” in light of all the challenges of planning student activities with social distancing. Pelchar has been working hard to ensure that students still have the opportunity to get involved and to make BC feel more like “home.”

“Our job…is to help students build a community, make friends, and get to know people,” Pelchar said, “so they can make Bluefield College their home.”

Pelchar works closely with the Student Activities Leadership Team (SALT) to achieve this goal. SALT consists of 40 student members, including resident assistants, members of the Student Government Association (SGA), and members of the college’s worship team, among other student leaders.

SALT has already planned a number of virtual and socially-distanced events this semester, including an outdoor welcome back bonfire, lawn games, comedy shows, virtual Bingo, a virtual murder mystery night, and a haunted Halloween scavenger hunt.

Alysia Townsley, a BC junior, is a first-year member of SALT. She’s been working a lot on planning and executing virtual events. She said her favorite part of event planning is “getting to interact with students at events.”

“It’s different trying to meet new people online,” said BC freshmen Laken Chronister about the challenges of virtual student activities, “but I definitely look forward for any activities.”
