Bluefield University’s men’s soccer team struggled to contain Union Commonwealth on Wednesday afternoon, falling 12-0 at East River Soccer Complex on October 28.
The Rams kept the match competitive early, trailing 2-0 at halftime after the Bulldogs scored in the 14th and 38th minutes. However, Bluefield continued their tendency to let the second half get away from them, as the visitors broke the game open, scoring 10 goals to secure the victory.
Union Commonwealth opened the scoring with a goal from Diego Yanes Garcia in the 14th minute before Tom McDonald added another late in the first half. The Rams entered halftime facing a two-goal deficit despite goalkeeper Canaan Newman making several saves to keep the match within reach.
The second half proved more difficult for Bluefield as Union Commonwealth found the back of the net eight minutes after the restart. Alessandro Nikolic scored in the 49th minute, beginning a stretch in which the visitors continued to increase their advantage.
Jacob Knight and Nathan Porter added goals shortly afterward, followed by another from McDonald in the 57th minute. The Bulldogs continued their offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the match, scoring six more times to complete the 12-goal performance.
Yanes Garcia led the visitors with two goals and two assists, while McDonald, Carlos Honrubia, and Jordan Blake each recorded two goals. Union Commonwealth finished with a massive 37 total shots, including 22 on target, and earned 11 corner kicks.
Bluefield managed three shots but was unable to put any on target. The Rams can’t seem to break their offensive struggles, as they were shut out for the seventh game in a row. Newman recorded nine saves, while Michael Hiatt made one save after entering late in the contest.
The defeat dropped the Rams to 2-13-1 overall and 0-11 in conference play. The Bulldogs improved to an impressive 15-3 overall and 11-1 in conference play, ranking first overall in the conference.
Bluefield will look to regroup as the season comes to a close, with their final match being at home against Tennessee Wesleyan. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. at East River Soccer Complex on the afternoon of Halloween, October 31.
