Bluefield University’s football team was unable to keep pace with the University of Pikeville on Saturday, October 24, falling 52-10 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup in Pikeville, Kentucky. Despite the loss, running back Kyree Edwards reached 1,000 rushing yards for the season, while freshman quarterback Brock Stomps made his collegiate debut after making a speedy recovery from a torn ACL during spring ball.
The Rams opened the game with a promising drive, moving 51 yards over 12 plays before kicker Isaiah Bandy connected on a 26-yard field goal with 7:46 remaining in the first quarter. Bluefield controlled the opening possession and took an early 3-0 lead.
Pikeville responded with a 12-play, 79-yard drive that ended with running back Amon Williams scoring on a seven-yard run. The Bears took a 7-3 lead with just over three minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
Bluefield regained the lead early in the second quarter when Stomps connected with wide receiver Jordan Edwards for a 17-yard touchdown. The seven-play, 73-yard drive gave the Rams a 10-7 advantage with 13:42 remaining in the first half.
Stomps’ appearance marked a significant moment for the Rams. He completed 22 of 32 passes for 172 yards and one touchdown, marking a notable return to the field after his injury and the passing struggles this season.
Pikeville answered on its next possession, putting together a drive that ended with Jayden Pepper breaking free for a 26-yard rushing touchdown. The Bears regained the lead at 14-10 with 10:59 remaining in the second quarter.
The Bears extended their advantage later in the half when Deajuan McDougle scored on a 31-yard run with 2:26 remaining before halftime. Pikeville entered the break leading 21-10 after scoring twice in the second quarter following Bluefield’s touchdown.
The second half proved to be the turning point for the Bears, as they surged offensively and exposed the Rams’ ongoing defensive struggles. Pikeville opened the third quarter with a 10-play, 90-yard drive that ended with a 44-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Hatton to Ty Perkins, extending the lead to 28-10.
Pikeville continued to find success on the ground and through the air. Williams scored on an 11-yard run later in the quarter before Hatton connected with Miguel Hernandez for a 16-yard touchdown pass. The Bears scored 21 points in the third quarter alone, extending their advantage to 42-10 entering the final period.
The defensive performance marked another disappointing outing for the Rams, continuing a trend that has challenged the team throughout the season. Through eight games, Bluefield has allowed 3,237 yards of total offense, an average of 404.6 yards per game. The Bears accumulated 499 yards, including 242 rushing yards and 257 passing yards, consistently moving the ball and capitalizing on scoring opportunities.
Pikeville continued to pull away in the fourth quarter, as Hatton scored on a three-yard rushing touchdown to make it 49-10. The Bears added a 40-yard field goal from Isaac Smith with 5:18 remaining to complete the scoring, 52-10.
Despite the defensive struggles, Bluefield had several individual performances worth recognizing. Defensive back Ezekiel Taylor recorded an interception and returned it 37 yards, providing a notable takeaway for the Rams. Taylor also finished with six total tackles and three pass breakups. Safety Titus Holte led Bluefield with 11 total tackles, including nine solo stops, while Elijah Padgett recorded five tackles and one tackle for loss.
Pikeville’s offensive production proved difficult for Bluefield to contain throughout the contest. The Bears finished with a 499-220 advantage in total offense, while also holding a 242-48 edge in rushing yards. Pikeville scored five rushing touchdowns and added two passing touchdowns, demonstrating their ability to sustain drives and attack both on the ground and through the air.
Jordan Edwards led Bluefield’s receiving corps with six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown. Jamonta Chavis added five receptions for 53 yards, while Kobe Johnson contributed two catches for 23 yards. Stomps spread the ball among his receivers as Bluefield attempted to keep pace with the Bears’ offense.
Despite the team’s struggles, Edwards reached a significant milestone during the contest. The running back finished with 47 rushing yards on 10 carries, bringing his season total to 1,009 yards. According to the Appalachian Athletic Conference, Edwards became the fifth player in conference football history to record a 1,000-yard rushing season. He is averaging 126.1 rushing yards per game.
Edwards’ achievement comes after a record-breaking performance against Reinhardt University the previous week, when he rushed for 154 yards on 28 carries and two touchdowns. He also added two receptions for 33 yards, finishing with 187 yards from scrimmage. His performance against Reinhardt pushed him past Bluefield’s previous single-season rushing record of 929 yards, set by Alex Martin in 2016.
The milestone against Pikeville further highlights Edwards’ importance to the Rams’ offense during the 2026 season. While the team was unable to keep pace with the Bears, his continued production has been a bright spot amid a challenging stretch of conference play.
The loss dropped Bluefield to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play, while Pikeville improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in conference action. Pikeville is now tied with Reinhardt for the number one spot in the AAC. Whoever finishes first will earn a spot in the NAIA playoffs.
As the Rams continue their conference schedule, Bluefield will look to build on individual performances such as Edwards’ milestones and Stomps’ return while addressing the defensive inconsistencies that have affected the team throughout the season.
Bluefield will return home to Mitchell Stadium for its last home game of the season against Kentucky Christian in a conference matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Halloween night, October 31.
