Bluefield University’s men’s soccer team faced a difficult second half, allowing four goals after the break in a 5-0 loss to the University of Pikeville on Sunday, October 18 in Pikeville, Kentucky.

The Rams entered halftime trailing 1-0 after keeping the match competitive through the opening 45 minutes. However, Pikeville’s offense found another gear in the second half, scoring four times in a span of 10 minutes to pull away.

The match followed a pattern that has been a recurring challenge for Bluefield throughout the season. The Rams have often remained competitive during the first half, only to see opponents create separation at halftime. Against Pikeville, the one-goal deficit at the break left Bluefield within reach of a result, but the second-half scoring surge turned a competitive match into a lopsided defeat. The recurring difficulty of maintaining that first-half competitiveness for a full 90 minutes has been a defining issue for the Rams this season.

Pikeville opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Elvis Simiyu finished a chance assisted by Juan Farkas. Bluefield goalkeeper Canaan Newman helped keep the deficit to one goal before halftime, making three saves in the first half as the Bears continued to test the Rams’ defense.

Bluefield created a few opportunities of its own during the opening period. Diego Valenzuela put a shot on target in the 24th minute, while Sebastian Armijos recorded two attempts, including one that forced a save from Pikeville goalkeeper Alejandro Iglesias late in the half.

The match remained within reach until the second half, when Bluefield faced increasing pressure from the Bears. Newman made a crucial save on a Pikeville penalty kick in the 60th minute, denying Jakub Rus and briefly keeping the Rams within one goal.

Pikeville broke through less than two minutes later. Tobias Bentzen scored in the 62nd minute off assists from Harry Galton and Rus, doubling the Bears’ advantage. Farkas added another goal in the 65th minute, assisted by Mahmoud Shech-Ichya, to make it 3-0.

Rus then scored twice in quick succession, finding the net in the 69th and 71st minutes to complete Pikeville’s five-goal performance. His second goal of the afternoon came less than three minutes after his first, capping a stretch in which the Bears scored four times in approximately 10 minutes.

Despite the second-half difficulties, Bluefield continued searching for a response. Gage Stamper put a shot on target late in the match, but Iglesias made the save to preserve Pikeville’s shutout.

Newman finished with five saves across 71 minutes in goal, while Michael Hiatt added three saves after entering in the second half. Together, the goalkeepers recorded eight saves against a Pikeville attack that produced 16 shots, 13 of which were on target.

Bluefield finished with four shots, putting three on goal. Pikeville also held an advantage in corner kicks, earning eight compared with zero for the Rams.

The loss dropped Bluefield to 2-10-1 overall and 0-8 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. Pikeville improved to 5-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference action.

As the Rams face the last leg of the season, finding a way to carry their first-half performances into the second half will be essential. Bluefield’s ability to stay competitive early has not consistently translated into results, and limiting defensive breakdowns after the break will be critical if the team hopes to change the course of these last few games.

The Rams will continue conference play and travel to Montreat College on Wednesday, October 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
