The first “Ram of the Week” of 2026 was sophomore Isaiah Sanders of the Bluefield University men’s basketball team. What began as a simple desire to play college basketball has turned into a place Sanders now proudly calls home at BU.
A native of Lexington, North Carolina, Sanders attended High Point Christian Academy before beginning his collegiate career at William Peace University. He transferred to Bluefield University this past fall, choosing to suit up for the Rams in part to reunite with his former high school coach Joseph Cooper.
In his first season as head coach of the men’s basketball program, Cooper had high praise for Sanders.
“We’re excited to bring him into our program because he’s ready to make an immediate impact,” Cooper said. “He understands the game, competes at a high level, and fits exactly what we’re building here.”
Beyond basketball, Sanders said Bluefield University’s small class sizes played a key role in his decision to transfer.
“Small classes give me structure that helps me succeed in the classroom,” Sanders said.
A sports management major, Sanders has earned recognition not only for his performance on the court, but also for his dedication in the classroom. Professor Mike Bandy described Sanders as a strong student and a faithful child of God, noting that he exemplifies what it means to be a Ram.
When asked about his future aspirations, Sanders continued to demonstrate the character that has drawn praise from coaches and professors alike.
“I want to give back to my community and create opportunities for younger kids to showcase their talent on the basketball court,” he said.
On the court, Sanders is known for his leadership and offensive decision-making, often stepping up in high-pressure moments. Assistant Coach Ethan Rainwater expressed excitement about Sanders’ continued development in blue and red.
“He’s the kind of player who raises the level of everyone around him,” Rainwater said. “He has the tools to help us right now, and that’s what excites us most.”
As the Rams continue their season, one thing is clear: Isaiah Sanders’ impact reaches far beyond the scoreboard, leaving a lasting impression on the program and the Bluefield University community.
