Students Share Thoughts on Academic Calendar Change

Bluefield University administrators have decided to change the academic calendar beginning with the 2026-2027 academic year. The most significant change will be that the fall semester will end prior to Thanksgiving. We asked BU students what they thought about the changes. This is what they had to say.

I like having the winter activities on campus like Christmas chapel and the themed drinks in the SAC. I think it brings life to campus, and leaving at Thanksgiving wouldn’t give us the opportunity to do that. Also as a women’s basketball player, I like seeing people on campus over break.

Zach Hafer, Biology
I’m not a fan of the new schedule because it will force our finals to be moved up, and that’s usually the time I can cram in some studying. When we move up winter break to right before Thanksgiving, we lose those two weeks to finish assignments.

Jacob Mitchell, Psychology
I’m from England, so this time next year I’ll be going home in the middle of November. I’m excited to get back home to my family and friends.

Charli Wynn, Business
As a winter athlete, I already have to be on campus so a change in the academic calendar does not affect me; however, I don’t want finals to be moved up.

Living seven hours away, it is hard to come back for just a week to take finals, so I feel like it’s more beneficial for students like me.
