After months of waiting and hard work, students at Bluefield University have finally moved into the newly updated Alumni Hall. The historic dormitory, which was closed after years of wear and tear and a fire in 2023, has been completely refurbished. Many students appreciate that the university invested in making the space not only functional but also welcoming and modern.
“I lived in Alumni before it was closed, and I really liked living there,” said senior Noah Burtner, “but it wasn’t Alumni Hall like this year.”
The $800,000 renovation project — made possible through grants and donations — has breathed new life into Alumni Hall. The renovations include new flooring, paint, furniture, bathrooms, and an upgraded HVAC system that provides reliable air conditioning. The building now features 46 single rooms with suite bathrooms. Upperclassmen can expect much more privacy and comfort than in the past.
“Alumni is very nice,” said transfer student Brandon Poole. “You have air conditioning, and you have a room to yourself.”
For many students, the improvements represent more than just better living conditions; they’re a symbol of progress and pride. Just ask sophomore Tucker Fontaine.
“I love living in Alumni,” he said. “I like living on my own, and I can control my air conditioning and heat, as well.”
The residence hall’s location is another big plus. Situated near the Dome Gymnasium, Alumni Hall is especially convenient for student-athletes balancing classes, practices, and competitions.
Although the old Alumni Hall was known for its leaks, outdated plumbing, and maintenance issues, the upgraded version has raised spirits on campus and illustrated the university’s plans for improvement.
As students begin to adjust to the newly renovated space, most agree that the renovations are truly worth the wait. Alumni Hall is a testament to Bluefield University’s commitment to honoring its heritage while providing a comfortable and useful space for its students.
