Local businesses are supporting Bluefield University students this year by giving discounts. In return, students are giving back by supporting local businesses, which helps strengthen community rapport.

“I think anytime the community is involved with our students, and we are involved with the community, it creates a positive dynamic,” said Kristen Parker, dean of students. “We have several students who are not from the area, and it helps them get to know the area and gives them places to go.”

Offering discounts is a way for local businesses to encourage education and show support for local college students. Some of the businesses that provide discounts include:

  • Portabella Restaurant in Bluefield, WV, which offers a 10 percent discount
  • The RailYard in Bluefield, WV, which offers a 10 percent discount
  • Pizza Hut in Bluefield, VA, which offers a 10 percent discount
  • Culture Mexican Restaurant in Bluefield, VA, which offers a 10 percent discount
  • The Seagull in Bluefield, VA, which offers a five percent discount
  • Aubade, a coffee shop in Princeton, WV, which provides a 10 percent discount on any drink, and
  • Walmart and Amazon, which offer half off their yearly memberships to college students.

For all these discounts, a student ID must be presented.

“It’s very encouraging when businesses recognize that college students might have very little income and so give them a discount,” said BU student Bethany Estoll. “Showing that kindness helps students feel supported and welcome, and it makes students more likely to visit that business.”

BU also has a few area businesses it works with to plan student activities and possible discounts.

“We have been able to pair with Mountaineer Bowling Lanes as a student activity, and are working on a partnership with the Golden Ticket Cinemas for an activity,” Parker said. “We hope to expand these to individual student discounts in the future.”

Parker added that the partnerships are designed to be mutually beneficial and to strengthen relationships between the university and local businesses.

“One thing we are working on is community growth,” Parker said, ”developing relationships so our students get discounts, and we as a campus community can help support local businesses and give back to the community.”
