The Purpose and Meaning Behind this Year’s Scripture Theme “Bold”

Being bold is not easy, but Christians are called to be bold. That’s why the theme verse for Bluefield University Student Ministries (BUSM) this year is 2 Corinthians 3:12, which states, “Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness.”

Campus Pastor Mason West described this as the true meaning and purpose behind choosing “bold” as the theme for the year. He spoke about his hope for using such a theme for ministry and worship.

“That we would as a campus learn to be more rooted in the hope that we believe in with the gospel,” he said. “That we would be rooted in our assurance in our faith, (and) that our lives would grow to reflect a confidence that God is who he says. True boldness only comes by having true hope.”

Student Ethan Richardson, a member of the Bluefield University Student Ministries (BUSM) worship band, agreed. For him, the theme verse means “getting out of (your) comfort zone and boldly living for Jesus.”

The “bold” theme for this year was very evident in the messages shared during the university’s annual fall Duremdes Christian Emphasis Week, labeled “Bold Week” this year. Twenty-seven students were baptized during the week, and 55 students made professions of faith. Jordyn Lambert, a Bluefield State University student who has been attending Home services since last fall, was one of the students who was baptized during “Bold Week.” She spoke about what “bold” means to her.

“The theme ‘bold’ means stepping out of my comfort zone because that’s where your life truly begins (at the end of your comfort zone),” Lambert said. “The theme of that week helped a lot even if I wasn’t thinking about it specifically in that moment. Ever since that week I have been trying to be more bold in my faith, trying my best to break bad habits and do more things that glorify God.”

Lambert is just one testament to the many things God did during “Bold Week.” Other evidence shows the Lord has been moving in the lives of students on campus.
