The start of the fall semester signals one thing in Bluefield — women’s volleyball. Led by a familiar face, head coach Keven John, the Rams are determined to build on their strong returning core while welcoming new talent into the mix. For Coach John, this year marks new ground as he takes the reins of both the men’s and women’s volleyball programs.

Key Returners

The Rams return a strong senior class, highlighted by All-Conference outside hitter and defensive specialist Liangelys Santana, who posted 352 kills and 359 digs last season. For Santana, her senior year is about more than just stats; it’s about finishing with a championship.

“Our biggest goal is to keep pushing ourselves and ultimately win the conference tournament,” Santana said. “This preseason is the hardest we’ve worked, and I truly believe all of that effort will help us win the championship.”

Also anchoring the lineup is senior defensive specialist Eledy Torres, who steps into the libero role after three years of competing behind former standout Georgia Lilly.

“Eledy has been working hard and gaining experience, and now she has the chance to put that jersey on early in the season,” Coach John said.

In the middle, senior Abbey Boehm looks to make her mark in her final year after recording 149 kills on 450 attacks last season.

“These three seniors have been setting the tone already,” Coach John noted. “I expect them to continue to lead the way for us.”

New Additions

The Rams’ roster is bolstered by exciting newcomers. Junior transfer Morgan Wigg brings power at the net, boasting an impressive near-10-foot vertical. Freshman setter Kylee Sturgill has already made her presence known, earning Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Setter of the Week honors in her debut week.

“The new faces are filling the offensive pieces we lost in Jocelyn [Evans],” Coach John explained. “We’re spreading the ball, playing faster, and embracing a style that we believe will give us an edge in conference play.”

Looking Ahead

The Rams open AAC play on September 19 at Bryan College in Dayton, TN. For Santana, every moment of her senior season feels special.

“Heading into my last season at BU, every little moment already feels special,” Santana said. “What excites me the most is competing with this incredible group of girls. There’s just something about playing alongside teammates you love and trust that makes it all even better.”

Coach John echoed the excitement as he looks forward to guiding the women’s team.

“I just love volleyball, whichever version it is,” Coach John said. “This group has embraced everything we’ve asked of them and worked extremely hard. Coaching them has been amazing.”

Fans can catch the Rams on their home court on September 26 against Johnson University in the Dome Gymnasium.
