Juggling life as a student, athlete and father, Bluefield University’s Andres Vega is defining what it means to give his all, both on and off the diamond.

Vega is a senior at Bluefield University where he plays baseball as an infielder while also earning his degree. He leads the Rams in hitting and is sixth in the NAIA with an average of .407. He also has two home runs and 22 runs batted in (RBI) and leads the team in stolen bases with seven. He spoke about how he balances studying with his responsibilities as an athlete and a father.

“I try to create a schedule and stick to it,” Vega said. “I make sure to plan time for school, training, and family, so nothing gets left out. But being away from home doesn’t make it easy. FaceTime calls are a huge part of the schedule.”

Vega also spoke about how being a father has changed his perspective on school and sports.

“(Being a father) has made everything more meaningful,” Vega said. “It gives you a different perspective on life. I want to set a good example and show my child hard work pays off.”

Vega also spoke about how he keeps motivated when things get overwhelming in the off-season and during baseball season.

“(To keep motivated) I think about my goals and my family,” Vega said. “They remind me why I started and keep me going even when it’s tough. Everything I’m doing now is not just for me anymore; I’m trying to leave a legacy for him, something he can carry on.”

Balancing all three roles, Vega admitted, is a challenge. He shared advice for others trying to pursue multiple goals at once.

“Stay organized, be consistent, and don’t be afraid to ask for help,” Vega said. “Take it one day at a time and keep your purpose in mind. If you plan on being a (parent), athlete, and student all at the same time, make sure you really plan ahead and have a strong support system.”
