Wright to Oversee Sims Wellness Center

Digital marketing and modern media • 2028

We all love a good workout, the muscle pump, the mental clarity, and the overall better feeling. What that requires is a well-maintained facility. That’s what women’s head basketball coach Jake Wright wants for Bluefield University students, and that’s why he has accepted the position to oversee the Herb Sims Wellness Center.

“I have always had a strong passion for the weight room, and I have been blessed to teach weights and conditioning at the high school level and also run weight rooms at the collegiate level,” Wright said. “I thought that this was a great way for me to help improve BU and do my part to make this university the best it can be.”

Located adjacent to the Bluefield University campus on Stadium Drive, the Herb Sims Wellness Center allows for top-level strength training for BU’s athletic program. The weight center is equipped with multiple sets of weights and additional training tools. The facility also houses offices for football coaches and is home to BU wrestling and cheer. Connected to the wellness center is an auditorium, which houses a 1,200 seat arena with a basketball court and stage. However, even the best facilities need upgrades.

“We are excited about the future of the Sims Center, and we are in the process of updating and upgrading a lot of different areas,“ Wright said. “We are hoping to install TVs, a new sound system, and upgrade some current machines to really improve the quality of your lift/workout in the Sims. I believe the future is extremely bright and exciting for BU and the Sims Center.”

At the core of Bluefield University is its Christian commitment. How will that commitment transition into the weight room?

“Having a faith-based environment in the Sims is a huge part of our future,” Wright said. “It starts with creating a safe and healthy learning environment that everyone who steps in there will feel comfortable and motivated to make small improvements. We want to foster a supportive community where individuals are encouraged to utilize their fitness as a way to serve God.”
