At Bluefield University, the heartbeat of its thriving community is reflected in the work of individuals like Daniel Mullins, whose creativity and dedication help capture the essence of university life and share it with the world.

As BU’s creative content and social media coordinator, Mullins’ role is far from typical, blending elements of photography, design, strategy, and community engagement to tell the Bluefield story.

A native of Tazewell, Virginia, Mullins’ journey into the world of creative content and communications is rooted in both formal education and hands-on experience. A graduate of Bluefield University with a degree in communication, Mullins credits much of his preparation for his current role to his academic and extracurricular activities.

“Managing the social media for my dad’s old bike shop, designing flyers for local churches, and networking with the Future Business Leaders of America were all valuable experiences,” Mullins said.

His time as a public relations intern at Bluefield University also shaped his understanding of the industry, and he’s especially thankful to professors like Dr. Cindy Bascom, Chris Shoemaker, Allen Roberts, and Rebecca Kasey for their mentorship and guidance.

Now, as BU’s creative content and social media coordinator, Mullin’s responsibilities are vast and varied. His work includes everything from photography and graphic design to social media management and public relations. He’s involved in videography, content strategy, website management, and ad campaign development.

“Each day brings new projects, ideas, and initiatives,” Mullins said. “There’s no such thing as a typical day.”

While he thrives in this dynamic environment, Mullins recognizes that balancing the creative with the strategic can sometimes be a challenge. He acknowledges the importance of staying organized and focused, but also credits his colleagues at Bluefield University, especially President Steve Peterson and Vice President of Enrollment Management and Marketing Travis Roberts, for bringing a sense of clarity and direction to the marketing efforts. Their leadership has allowed Mullins to focus on the creative aspects of his role without sacrificing the strategic goals of the university’s online presence.

Mullins has witnessed firsthand the challenges that come with transitions in higher education.

“A few years ago, we faced turnover and capacity issues due to trends in the higher education industry,” he recalled. “But now, with the leadership of Dr. Peterson and a committed team, we’ve rebuilt processes and made significant progress.”

Collaboration has been key in overcoming these challenges, and Mullins is quick to credit his team of student workers — Caleb Honaker, Denzel Dzokamushure, Jeremiah Stevenson, and Karyss Milby — for their contributions.

“Without them, much of what I do wouldn’t be possible,” Mullins said.

For Mullins, the most rewarding part of his job is capturing moments that will last a lifetime. Whether it’s photographing a student’s graduation or recording the joy of a campus event, Mullins finds deep meaning in preserving these memories.

“You never know when it will be your last chance to share a memory and get a picture with someone,” he said. “I want to help make that possible for others.”

His passion for photography is rooted in personal experience and the mentorship of his brother, Matthew Mullins, a skilled photographer himself.

“I wouldn’t know what I do without him,” Mullins said, reflecting on the impact Matthew’s guidance has had on his own work.

One of Mullins’ greatest strengths is his ability to reflect the core values and mission of Bluefield University in the content he creates.

“Bluefield’s biggest strength is its community,” Mullins said. “When you spend time with the employees, students, and alumni, you know exactly what the university represents.”

He feels deeply connected to Bluefield’s mission, especially through his involvement in campus ministries, which he believes gives him a true understanding of what the university stands for — serving students, the region, and ultimately God. When it comes to his future goals, Mullins is refreshingly humble.

“I don’t have a specific milestone or title in mind,” he admitted. “I’ve learned that God will open the doors He wants you to walk through.”

Rather than focusing on a linear career path, Mullins’ approach is one of patience, waiting for opportunities that align with his purpose and values.

“Make the most of the season you’re in now,” he encouraged others, “and see what doors open up.”

Mullins’ colleagues at Bluefield University hold him in high regard, not only for his professional skills but also his character. Co-worker Sherelle Morgan, director of alumni relations, describes Mullins as “incredibly kind, considerate, and always willing to help.” Despite his busy schedule, Mullins is known for his thoughtful approach, always taking the time to assist others when needed.

“He’s a great listener and truly embodies the spirit of teamwork,” Morgan added.

According to Morgan, Mullins’ strong work ethic, positive attitude, and deep love for Bluefield University make him an invaluable asset to the institution.

“His pride for our school shines through in the content he creates,” Morgan said. “He’s able to capture meaningful moments and present Bluefield in the best light, helping attract students to our Christ-centered learning environment.”

Mullins is a prime example of how passion, creativity, and dedication can come together to make a meaningful impact. Whether he’s capturing the joy of a campus event, crafting compelling social media content, or collaborating with his colleagues to share Bluefield’s story, Mullins’ work is a testament to his love for the university and the people who make it special. With his ability to balance creativity with strategy, his strong sense of community, and his unwavering faith, Mullins is poised to continue making an impact at Bluefield University for years to come.
