Miss Sharon: The Heart of the BU Cafeteria
For nine years, Miss Sharon has been a beloved presence in the Bluefield University cafeteria, starting as a dishwasher and working her way to being the friendly face many students look forward to seeing each day. Her journey began not with a passion for food but for people.
“The people of BU are who inspired me to work here,” she said. “Students, faculty, everyone.”
Each day, Miss Sharon’s routine involves setting up the salad bar, breakfast bar, and other food stations for hungry students rushing between classes. While the cafeteria menu is pre-planned, Miss Sharon finds joy in the unpredictable flow of each day, always staying one step ahead.
“I’m always running around to make sure everything’s ready to go,” she said with a laugh. “There are no challenges for me. I love working here. Laughter gets rid of stress.”
Her cheerful attitude extends far beyond her daily tasks. Known for her warm conversations with students, Miss Sharon takes time to ask about their day, where they’re from, and how they’re adjusting to university life.
“I want to get to know them, especially the first-year students,” Miss Sharon said. This personal touch has made her a standout figure on campus with parents even expressing their gratitude for how she treats their children like her own.
Additionally, Miss Sharon brings homemade Jell-o for Halloween and Christmas candy for students to enjoy during the holidays. As a way of bringing warmth and a sense of family to Bluefield, she is reminding students that they are cared for in more ways than one. When asked what motivates her to come to work each day, her answer is simple and heartfelt.
“The people,” she said. “I wake up happy to be here.”
Her advice for students is just as sincere.
“Be safe. Be smart. Always listen to what you’re told and stay out of trouble,” she said.
Miss Sharon’s love for the campus community and her boundless energy make her an irreplaceable part of Bluefield University and a constant source of joy for students and staff alike.
