Being a Bluefield Univeristy Ambassador is more than just a title; it’s an opportunity to represent BU, connect with prospective students, and assist in shaping the campus community.

The ambassador program is managed by the university’s Office of Enrollment Management and is open to all BU students. Ambassadors help with a variety of admissions events, including move-in days, Experience Day, and campus tours. Senior Abby Gasperson is a BU Ambassador and spoke about what being an ambassador has done for her.

“I have gotten to meet new students and form relationships with them,” Gasperson said. “It has also taught me how to present myself and to perform better as a communication major.”

Campus tours are a main task for BU Ambassadors, so it is important that they have a knowledge of campus facilities and provide a relatable voice to prospective students. Unlike admissions staff, who present the university in a formal way, student ambassadors give the inside look at life on campus.

Brooke Osborne, a 2021 BU graduate and now interim director of traditional admissions, said her favorite part of working with the students at her alma mater is “being able to help students find their best fit in college and hear the student ambassador team’s stories.”

There are many benefits to becoming a BU Ambassador, such as strengthening university connections, enhancing resumes, gaining a sense of pride, and securing work study opportunities. Serving as an ambassador also looks impressive on resumes by demonstrating leadership, involvement, and responsibility, which all employers find appealing.

In addition, BU Ambassadors are provided the opportunity to share their Bluefield story and why BU was the right fit for them, which can form connections with potential students and existing members of the Bluefield community.

Gasperson encourages students looking to become ambassadors to “be themselves and have fun with the experience.” To apply for a BU Ambassador position, email Osborne at bosborne@bluefield.edu.
