Bluefield University hosted its 33rd Annual Duremdes Christian Emphasis Week, September 25-27, an event designed to foster spiritual growth and community engagement among students, faculty, staff, and residents.

This year’s theme, “Presence,” inspired by Exodus 33:14, focused on the ever-constant presence of God in our lives and the transformative power it holds.

“I believe that Duremdes Christian Emphasis Week is a time to experience true revival on campus,” said Landon Breeden, Team Lead for Student Ministries, “within the lives and hearts of students, faculty, staff, and community members.”

This sentiment resonated throughout the week with activities and teachings that encouraged participants to deepen their understanding of God’s presence. Grace Trent, the worship leader for Campus Ministries, echoed this sentiment and reflected on the key message she took away from the week.

“I learned that God’s presence is with us always,” Trent said. “He never leaves us or forsakes us. Most importantly, I was reminded that my circumstances in life do not define how good of a Father He is. He is good all the time.”

This message served as a grounding truth for many attendees, reinforcing the idea that God’s goodness transcends the ups and downs of everyday life.

The speaker for the week, Anthony Gurrola, left a lasting impression on the community. Trent noted, “I enjoyed Anthony’s teachings about God’s presence and found his speaking to be engaging and relatable to students.”

Beyond his messages, Gurrola made a genuine effort to connect with attendees, showing interest in their lives and experiences. This relational approach made his teachings even more impactful, fostering an environment where students felt valued and heard.

Throughout the week, Bluefield University students participated in and hosted several meaningful events as part of Christian Emphasis Week. These included a prayer drive-thru, chapel services, and a worship night featuring “The Altar Music.” The week culminated in a “Presence Party,” filled with fellowship, connection, and fun, providing an opportunity for the community to bond and celebrate together.

One of the standout events of the week was the foot washing ceremony held in the Quad, an act deeply rooted in Christian tradition. Trent and Breeden both had the opportunity to wash the feet of students and employees.

“In the Bible, Jesus washed the disciples’ feet in a humble act of love,” Trent explained. “This event reminded us of the sacrifice of Jesus to wash us clean from our sins. It was a time to show staff and students how much we love, value, and care for them.”

This intimate and humbling experience encapsulated the spirit of the week, encouraging participants to embody Christ’s love in their interactions with one another, and it reminded the campus community of how Christian Emphasis Week holds significant value for the Bluefield University community. As Trent said, it is a time for fellowship, spiritual growth, and learning more about Jesus.

“This (Christian Emphasis Week) gives students an opportunity to be fully immersed in fun activities, times of worship, and learning about faith in God,” she said. “The week is not just about spiritual reflection, but also about creating lasting memories and relationships. It is a truly rewarding week that I look forward to each year, and I will cherish the times I had this past Duremdes Week for the rest of my life.”

The 33rd Annual Duremdes Christian Emphasis Week at Bluefield University was a powerful reminder of God’s constant presence and love. Through engaging teachings, meaningful activities like foot washing, and a spirit of community, participants were encouraged to embrace their faith and each other. As Trent added, the week not only fostered spiritual growth but also strengthened the bonds of fellowship among students, faculty, and staff, leaving an indelible mark on all who attended.
