Bluefield University president Dr. David W. Olive announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year after 17 years of service.

During his 17 years as president, Dr. Olive led the development of BU’s first online degree programs, the formation of new programs in the health sciences, the creation of the university’s first master’s degree programs, construction of new residence halls, expansion of the Science Center, the successful completion of a $25 million campaign, and a merger with the Edwa rd Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM). In a letter to BU’s chair of the Board of Trustees Todd Asbury on August 1, 2023, later shared with BU faculty and staff, Dr. Olive said the time is right for his departure.

“The future of Bluefield University is bright and the time for transition is right as a new strategic plan is being launched,” Olive wrote. “The landscape of higher education is rapidly changing. The institution needs a leader with a grasp of trends and the energy to shape and direct institutional change to meet the current and future needs of our students. Seventeen years is a long time to serve as president. The latest survey by the Chronicle of Higher Education indicates presidents are now serving on average 5.9 years, down from 8.5 in 2006.”

Championing Online Education

One of Dr. Olive’s major accomplishments during his tenure was the initiation of Bluefield University’s online program. When he first assumed the presidency, online education was a burgeoning field. Dr. Olive recognized the potential of online learning and successfully advocated for its implementation. Prior to his arrival, the university had relied on scattered facilities across Virginia to accommodate an in-person adult degree program. Dr. Olive’s vision streamlined these efforts, consolidating the institution into a single online platform. This shift not only catered to the needs of working adults who struggled to attend physical classes, but also aligned Bluefield University with modern trends in education.

Expanding Academic Horizons

Under Dr. Olive’s leadership, Bluefield University’s academic landscape flourished. The institution, once primarily focused on undergraduate degrees, now boasts a diverse array of academic offerings, including seven master’s degree programs with various concentrations. This expansion has broadened the university’s reach and impact, attracting a more diverse student body and contributing to its academic prestige.

Investing in Campus Infrastructure

Dr. Olive’s commitment to growth extended beyond academics; he was equally dedicated to improving the campus infrastructure. Upon taking office in 2007, the newest residential building at that time, Alumni Hall, had been standing for nearly three decades.

“It’s like the campus had stopped building to grow,” Dr. Olive said, “and if you stop building you cannot grow.”

However, he was always a proponent that Bluefield needs to grow; hence, he teamed up with the faculty members to start planning the construction of a new residence hall. Dr. Olive believed that growth was essential for the institution’s prosperity, and he spearheaded the construction of new residential halls, including East River Hall and Bluestone Commons, which officially opened their doors in 2014. His belief that a university must continually evolve and expand became a guiding principle throughout his presidency.

A President Who Connects with Students

What sets Dr. Olive apart, however, is not just his list of accomplishments, but the deep connections he forges with students. Despite his formal role, he makes it a priority to establish personal relationships with students. Dr. Olive’s genuine care and concern for students is exemplified in events like the International’s Dinner, a heartwarming gathering at his home with his wife, Kathryn, that welcomes international students to Bluefield University and provides them with a sense of belonging. His commitment to nurturing a supportive community resonates with students and earns him their respect and admiration.

A Legacy of Faith and Service

Dr. Olive’s dedication to nurturing young minds extends to faith and service. He firmly believes that knowledge, when combined with faith, creates individuals who aspire to give back and become servant leaders.

“Knowledge is important, but faith is equally if not more important, hence the two together can develop a type of individual who wants to give back and become a servant leader,” Dr. Olive said. His belief in the university’s potential to mold such individuals drove his leadership.

Fond Farewell and Future Endeavors

While the announcement of Dr. Olive’s retirement undoubtedly saddens the Bluefield University community, it also marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life. After retirement, Dr. Olive plans to return to his roots and be closer to his wife’s parents. Yet, his passion for education and community service will remain. He plans to stay involved with Bluefield University, potentially as an advisor to the new president and the university as needed. As he prepares to pass the torch to his successor, the legacy he leaves behind at Bluefield is one of growth, innovation, and unwavering dedication to students and their futures. His impact will be felt for generations to come, a testament to his extraordinary leadership and commitment to higher education.
