Bluefield University has new women’s softball coach: Maggie White. White came to BU from Ferrum College, where she served as the associate head softball coach, senior women’s administrator, and assistant director of athletics.

White worked at Ferrum for the previous eight years and assisted with the transition of the school’s softball team from the USA South Conference to NCAA Division III’s dominant Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Under her leadership, she had numerous Players/Pitchers of the Year and All-Southern Conference players.

Prior to Ferrum, she served as head coach at Radford University from 2013 to 2015 and Georgia Southern University from 2009 to 2011. Her Radford team competed in the Big South Conference, and several players were named All-Conference. At Southern, she became the fastest coach to 50 wins.

In 2010, White also worked as an assistant coach with the National Professional Fastpitch (NPF) League’s Chicago Bandits. The Bandits won the regular season championship and competed against the United States Specialty Sports Association Pride for the Cowles Cup in a very successful season. White has also coached in the New River Valley Diamonds organization at several age levels, giving her expertise in neighborhood fastpitch trip softball leagues.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Bluefield University family,” White said about becoming the Lady Rams’ head coach. “I want to express my gratitude to President David Olive and Director of Athletics Corey Mullins for putting their trust in me to run the softball program. I also consider it a pleasure to be able to guide our team as they develop as female student-athletes.”

White earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington in 2001, where she started for the Seahawks for four seasons and was named to the Southern Conference’s All-Tournament and All-Conference teams in 2000 and 2001. Later, in 2003, she graduated from Boston University with a master’s degree in counseling and sport psychology. Now, as leader of the Lady Rams softball team, she brings leadership and substantial coaching experience to a program looking to rebuild, according to AD Mullins.

“Maggie rapidly distinguished herself as a capable leader during the search who understands how to attract, develop, and succeed at the highest level,” Mullins said. “She has been successful in D1. From her tenure as Ferrum’s associate head coach, she has benefited greatly.”

In less than four months on campus and even prior to the start of her first season, White has already created bonds with her student-athletes. She has also articulated a distinct vision for the program both on and off the field.

“We have a young, talented squad, and I look forward to watching how they progress under Coach White’s direction,” Mullins said.

White said she is confident the Lady Rams can compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and the NAIA. She said the team has incredibly talented players recruited by previous coach Baylee Allen.

“The task at hand is to maintain our investment in softball while making the critical choices to enhance the student-athlete experience,” White said, “and develop a program that reflects the goals of the university and the Athletic Department.”
