BU’s Hidden Heroes
Athletic trainers oftentimes don’t get the appreciation they deserve. Bluefield University’s athletic training (AT) team creates a positive and safe environment where students can develop relationships, receive treatment and rehab for injuries, and get care for minor illnesses.
BU’s AT team includes five trainers: Erika Bell (head athletic trainer), Josh Shroyer, Stephen Baldwin, Stormy Hill, and Aundrea McDaniel. This team brings excellent experience and professionalism to Bluefield.
Bell, a long-time Bluefield veteran, primarily handles paperwork, insurance information, and other miscellaneous responsibilities while providing students with rehab and treatment.
“Erika is very passionate about her work and always does what is best for the athlete,” said men’s soccer player J.G. Keene. “She also is very professional and organized. I never have to worry about insurance issues or anything.”
You will get to know Shroyer well if you are a football player. Shroyer primarily handles football and women’s basketball. He is excellent at providing athletes with the complicated truth and pushing athletes to recover and prepare for games. Shroyer is very experienced and gives extra attention to complicated and critical injuries.
“He is not as serious as everyone thinks,” said Kerly Thelsume, a member of the Rams football team. “He builds a relationship with athletes further than our sport. I appreciate that Josh helps me on and off the field.”
McDaniel is in her third year at Bluefield. She mainly works with men’s and women’s soccer and women’s softball. She allows athletes a safe place to vent and go for off-the-field issues. Her extensive knowledge allows her to help athletes on the field, as well.
“Aundrea gives me the best care when I am injured or need treatment,” said Adam Gymnander, another member of the men’s soccer team. “She is a lifesaver, and I will always appreciate everything she does for me and the men’s soccer program.”
The Athletic Training Department at Bluefield is committed to bringing BU athletes the best care and service. Their never-ending compassion, work ethic, and knowledge keep our athletes out on the field.
