Bluefield University takes pride in being a Christian University. In fact, the BU mission states that the university is “a Christ-centered learning community developing servant leaders to transform the world.” There is no better evidence of that than students making professions of faith, and this academic year alone, 38 BU students have come to know Christ by being baptized during campus ministry services.

One particular way the university demonstrates its mission is through its student ministries programs, including small group studies, revival nights, an Impact outreach team, and Elevate, a weekly worship service hosted by Bluefield University Student Ministries (BUSM). It’s through Elevate that these 38 students have been baptized, including 29 in February and 22 on February 26 alone.

“I think it is beautiful,” said BU campus pastor Mason West about the number of baptisms this year, “but I also believe it is just a glimpse of how we are seeing our generation return to the truth of who Jesus is.”

After Spring Break, the number of baptisms grew to 38 for the whole academic year. BU senior Isaiah Rife said it has been a wonderful experience to watch.

“It truly has been a magical semester,” Rife said. “It has been heartwarming and has been such an amazing experience.”

Fellow BU student Caleb Word spoke about the courage it takes to make a public profession of faith and to make a commitment to follow Christ.

“Many people are scared to make the jump because of the fear of messing up,” Word said, “but God is so forgiving and will forgive you for your sins. I like to say I’m a Christian under construction. I am always working to be perfect, but it takes time and work like a construction site.”

Being baptized is an outward expression of giving your life to Christ. It’s a commitment to put away old habits and to become a better person as a Christian. West added that while making that profession of faith and being baptized is important, there are still hurdles to overcome.

“We are also continuing the process of discipleship with all who have made this huge commitment to their walk in Christ,” West said.

Students will have one more chance to be baptized and to increase the number of baptisms during Elevate’s final service of the year April 23. For more information about student ministries, contact West by email at mwest@bluefield.edu.
