Devin Calloway: Mr. Bluefield
Devin Calloway is a shining example of a Bluefield University student-athlete. His outstanding accomplishments and commitment to the campus community make him a standout student, athlete, and leader during his five years at Bluefield.
His commitment to his education is an exciting story as it did not start at Bluefield. Calloway was looking to attend Virginia Commonwealth University instead of Bluefield University – a much bigger school with different opportunities. Calloway made a last-minute decision to sign his letter of intent to play soccer for the Bluefield Rams.
“It was a tough decision to make,” said Calloway. “Being a young high schooler, it is tough to make a decision like that. I prayed to the Lord and asked for guidance. With that being said, I landed here at Bluefield and have had no regrets since.”
Calloway said that his first year at Bluefield was rough – roommate issues, academic courses, and soccer. It was not all sunshine and rainbows. His willingness to stay strong and rooted kept Calloway focused and on his feet during his first year.
Longtime friend and teammate Jovani Konstanty said, “Devin is the sort of guy that never gives up. He never lets outside forces get to him. He is determined, focused, and goal driven.”
On the pitch, Calloway started slowly as well. He was not getting much playing time or mentorship due to poor team leadership. He seemed to be swimming upstream in his first couple of years. His determination, however, would result in him becoming one of the team’s most respected players. In fact, he earned the captain band his junior year and would show his team and the campus what a great leader he is. He began to enjoy much success his junior year. He earned all 90 minutes of playing time during each game and fought for the Rams consistently, only to follow that up his senior year with his first collegiate goal. But, his success on the field did not stop there. Calloway led the Rams to a four-game win streak during his senior campaign.
“My success on the field did not come right away,” said Calloway. “I had to fight repeatedly to prove myself to the coaching staff all five years I have been here. I may not be the most technical player, but I am the hardest working and will give my all until the end.”
Outside of being a scholar-athlete, Calloway is a student leader on campus. He is wearing multiple hats for the Student Development Department, including resident assistant, admissions counselor, and campus tour coordinator. Calloway has devoted himself to improve not only himself but his campus community as a whole. He is constantly involved in campus events and activities.
The December 2022 graduate leaves his footprint on Bluefield as he wraps up his campaign at Bluefield University. He has touched many hearts and has helped hundreds of people. His never-ending passion for leadership and success will only help him on his next journey. Calloway looks to pursue a master’s degree in sports management. Ultimately, he wants to be a social media director for a sports team.
