Familiar Face to Serve as BU Alumni Director

Sports Communication Major • 2025

Bluefield University recently named a new director of alumni relations, but while new to the position Sherelle Morgan is not new to Bluefield as she enters her seventh year of service to BU.

A native of Martinsville, VA, Morgan attended the University of Virginia where she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology before going on to work 20 years in human resources leadership in the areas of recruiting, diversity, equity, inclusion, and talent management.

She began working at Bluefield University in 2015 as the director of online admissions. She served in that role for six years before adding to her duties the position of Coordinator for Belonging, a new strategic college-wide role that is designed to foster and promote a campus culture that minimizes bias and recognizes and addresses systemic inequities. She gave up her admissions duties to become the director of alumni relations this year because she said she wanted to try something new.

“I wanted to basically diversify my career path and my employment history,” Morgan said, “because I do love higher education, and I want continue to grow within higher ed. So I thought it was a good opportunity at this point in my life to pivot and to move in to something new.”

In this new role, Morgan sees her responsibility as “cultivating and nurturing the relationships that we have with our many wonderful esteemed alumni of Bluefield University.”

“It is my commitment to our alumni to offer events, services, and activities that are engaging and meaningful,” Morgan said in a press release published by BU Public Relations. “I’m excited to collaborate with our graduates to make new memories while honoring their time at BU.”

Morgan will also work with alumni to bring activities to campus. She will be working with the Alumni Board of Directors to “lay the ground work” for the students soon to be alumni. She said she’s looking forward to her new role with the university, particularly spending time with alumni.

“In the short time that I’ve been in the role, I’ve already had an opportunity to interact and engage with those people and they are the best people around,” Morgan said. “They have great stories, they’ve lived great lives, and had wonderful careers.”

Joshua Cline, vice president for institutional advancement and marketing, said he has seen Morgan engage with current and prospective students over the years in her previous roles with BU, and he’s confident she will engage well with former students.

“I am excited to see her bring that level of care and attention to our Alumni Association,” Cline said in a BU press release. “I know she will help the university tell the stories of how Bluefield enabled our alumni to go further in life.”

While working at Bluefield, Morgan also decided to pursue her master’s degree in business administration. She earned her MBA in December 2021. She is married to husband, Richard, who is head coach for BU men’s basketball. They have two sons, Nick, a graduate of Gardner-Webb University who now works as an international coordinator at Steam Logistics, and Kaleb, a BU freshman who also plays for the Rams basketball team.
