A Review of Rams Spring Football
The Bluefield University football team recently finished its spring football training — the first spring football since the beginning of COVID — and coaches and players alike are excited about the overall success of the training period.
“The spring (workouts) went well,” said Dino Kaklis, associate head coach and defensive coordinator. “This was our first spring in three years. There are 80 guys on this football team that have never done spring ball here.”
Head coach Dewey Lusk agreed and described a perfect spring game as the offense scoring a few times, the defense making a few stops, and special teams kicking where they are supposed to. All of those things happened, making Coach Lusk and the entire coaching staff very satisfied.
In fact, the Rams defense looked much improved, according to the coaches, making a few stops and even forcing a few fumbles. The Rams struggled on defense last year, giving up 41.3 points per game.
The Rams return nine players on both sides of the ball, which provides experience on the field and leadership for newcomers to learn.
“Spring has been great,” said assistant coach Devon Jackson. “There has been a lot of progressing in a lot of different people — not only on the field, but in the weight room and in the playbook. The team has also learned how to practice at a high level.”
The Rams finished the 2021 regular season on a five-game winning streak and look forward to maintaining that momentum this fall.
“I think this is the year we can really compete for a conference championship,” said rising junior running back Cadence Lampp. “We have a lot of returners, and everyone has put in a lot of work this spring.”
