Morgan Named Coordinator of Belonging

Communication • 2022

Sherelle Morgan has been named Bluefield University’s Coordinator of Belonging, a critical and strategic college-wide role designed to foster and promote a campus culture that minimizes bias and acknowledges and addresses systemic inequities.

The Coordinator of Belonging position was created by the university after the completion of a diversity audit in the fall of 2020, which included feedback from students, faculty, staff and administrative leadership on the strengths and weaknesses of the university when it comes to things such as diversity, equity and inclusion.

“The survey findings indicated that one of the top suggested areas for improvement was a formal individual, office or formal committee responsible with organizing and developing campus-wide diversity initiatives,” Morgan said. “As a result, the position of Coordinator for Belonging was established.”

According to Morgan, the role entails two main objectives, which are to promote a campus culture that minimizes bias and recognizes and addresses systemic inequities, and to provide leadership on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) matters in all areas of campus life.

This position plays a major role in keeping the campus diverse and equality on the forefront of the culture at BU, and Morgan’s enthusiasm for the responsibility comes from her experience prior to Bluefield.

“Prior to joining Bluefield in 2015, I spent almost 20 years in human resources at Ferguson, a wholesale plumbing distribution company,” Morgan said. “During that period, I worked in a variety of positions, including as the organization’s first diversity program manager. My enthusiasm for DEI is as strong today as it was then.”

Among the services to be offered by Morgan to students, faculty and staff are group trainings and education, awareness activities and exercises, guest speakers, incident reporting, referral services, and consultation with campus stakeholders.

“I conducted a workshop on implicit bias with student leaders and RAs (resident advisors) in early August,” Morgan said, “(and) two guest speakers are scheduled this fall.”
