Easy Dorm Room Meals

Communication and Theatre • 2020

Living in a dorm room usually limits the foods you can make, so we thought we’d provide students with a little help by sharing some easy recipes that can be made in the microwave in a dorm room.

Microwave Mac and Cheese

As someone that makes homemade baked mac and cheese, I appreciate having a quick and easy alternative for the microwave in my dorm room. In fact, microwave mac and cheese in a mug has become one of my go-to recipes. I don’t mean Kraft mac and cheese. I mean the closest you can get to homemade mac and cheese, but in the microwave. In a microwave-safe mug, add your pasta of choice – elbow, shells, etc. – and then add water and stir. If you prefer, place the pasta and water in a microwave-safe bowl to catch any water that might boil over when it cooks. Cook the noodles in the microwave for two minutes, and continue to cook until the pasta is tender. Then, add a quarter teaspoon of cornstarch and quarter cup of sharp cheddar cheese. Feel fee to add more cheese, if you prefer. Stir and place back in the microwave for 20 seconds.

Microwave Mug Pizza

With marinara sauce, shredded mozzarella cheese and pepperoni on top of a biscuit-like crust, microwave mug pizza is pretty close to regular pizza made in the microwave. I normally swap out the marinara sauce for melted butter and skip the pepperoni, but that’s just me. You can find the recipe on Microwave Mug Pizza Recipe (with Video) | Bigger Bolder Baking.

Microwave Mug Cakes

As someone that loves desserts, I have made lots of microwave mug cakes when I want a dessert ready in minutes. For example, one of the tastiest is a strawberry and cream cake. For this you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • 4 tablespoons flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 strawberries diced
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.

In a 12-ounce mug, mix all of the ingredients together until combined. Then, microwave for 90 seconds to two minutes until the mix is no longer doughy on top, and then let it cool for one minute before eating. These are just a few quick microwave treats you can make in a dorm room that show that even with living in a dorm you can get a break form the cafeteria and make more than just prepackaged foods.
