Top Five Shows on Netflix

Graphic Communication • 2021

With the majority of the world’s population spending more time indoors due to the the coronavirus pandemic, people are likely spending more time watching shows from the variety of streaming platforms. Netflix has hundreds of shows to choose from, but sometimes you may not know what to watch. We thought we’d help you make those decisions with a list of the Top Five Shows on Netflix.

While these options are my own personal opinions, they are based on what I think people look for in a show. When starting this list I wanted to choose shows that I felt shared every emotion and presented a plot so interesting that it would have you on the edge of your seat.

Stranger Things

Let’s start off with an Emmy award-winning show named “Stranger Things.” This is a show created by the brothers Matt and Ross Duffer. The first season is a masterclass in atmosphere and storytelling with an amazing cast and mysteries galore. The plot is a mystery to watch unfold. The show had me on the edge of my seat questioning what surprise was coming next at the end of every episode. The last season ended with a cliffhanger with a hint of the show’s return.

Sherlock

This next show is a familiar name that has had many adaptations over the years. “Sherlock” is a British crime television series that is based off of Sherlock Holmes detective stories. The story’s main character, Sherlock Holmes, accompanied by Dr. John Watson, goes on eccentric adventures to stop mass murders, terrorists and assassins. Unlike “Stranger Things,” this show doesn’t feature any horror, so if you aren’t a fan of that, you’re safe with this selection. “Sherlock” is loaded with mystery because, of course, it’s Sherlock Holmes, but the amount of thrill and suspense will have you on the edge of your seat craving for more.

The Queen’s Gambit

Would you ever expect a show to be dedicated to one of the most strategic games ever to be played? “The Queen’s Gambit” is a show about an orphan girl who discovers the game of chess by playing with the head janitor of the orphanage. One day she was adopted by a nice family and started to live a normal life. While in high school, she began to enter chess tournaments and had immediate success playing against her peers. She was so good she broke many records and was invited to play globally. With her success as a chess player, she was respected all around the globe. I never would have thought watching a show about chess would be more educational than interesting. Through the entire show, it had me wondering how far she could go playing against some of the top chess players in the world. The uniqueness of the plot was overwhelming, which made the feeling of finishing the series satisfying.

Money Heist

Many have said “Money Heist” will be the most talked about show to ever be streamed. “Money Heist” is a show about a team of bank robbers who take hostages while trying to pull off one the biggest robberies to be witnessed. As the mastermind behind the job remains anonymous and distant, the authorities do everything in their power to take them down. The show has many twists by having most of the characters with their own agenda instead of carrying out the stated plan of action. It’s those personal agendas that take the story on a bumpy road of violence, shock and betrayal.

Altered Carbon

Are you interested in seeing adaptations of the future? If so, “Altered Carbon” is a show that will leave you wondering what the world will become in the future. The show is about an old military soldier who becomes rogue when he’s assigned to eliminate his sister who he was separated from at a young age. While on the run he comes along a scientist who has plans to create little discs, called stacks, that can contain a person’s soul. With stacks, they can be transferred from one body to the next, but if destroyed that person is wiped from existence. With that plan the soldier and the scientist are targets and are hunted while they continue their journey to start a new world and find peace.

Each show has its own unique plot and special way of shocking the audience. Be sure to watch each one with an open mind, and with the pandemic still going on we hope these shows will help occupy your time indoors while you relax and lounge around a little.
