BC Football Team Prepares for First Spring Season
The Bluefield College football team has been gearing up for its first-ever spring football season since this past fall.
Several concerns related to COVID-19 in the fall led to the postponement of the season until the spring. After a long period of training and preparation, the team is more than ready to begin play. However, some members of the team are apprehensive about the season.
“It has been extremely cold outside during practice, and the winter storm warnings we’ve received for the area lately make me nervous for the team,” said team manager Matthew Mainville, who spoke about his concerns for the upcoming football season.
Adjusting to the cold temperatures this spring will certainly be a challenge, added head coach Dewey Lusk.
“I hope the snow is more of an advantage for the team than a disadvantage,” he said.
On the other hand, Anthony Durham, the team’s Head Equipment Manager, feels that there is no change to the season.
“I think this football season will be just like the others,” Durham said. “The only difference is that it’s in the spring, but I hope the season runs smoothly.”
For some members of the team, the season will be bittersweet.
“I’m a senior, so this is my last football season,” said Mainville, who has been a dedicated member of the team for five years. “I’m happy to be graduating in May, but I’m also sad that this is my last season with the team.”
Despite the differences in team members’ feelings about the spring season, they have one thing in common. “We want to play in the playoffs,” Lusk said.
Fortunately, fans will be able to attend the football games this season, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. However, they must wear a mask at all times and follow social distancing procedures. Fans will also have the ability to livestream each home game.
The season kicked off on February 6, 2021, at Mitchell Stadium in Bluefield, West Virginia. The full game schedule can be found at bcrams.com.
