BC Women’s Tennis Looks for Recognition
The Bluefield College women’s tennis team continues to work hard to compete in the conference and to proudly represent the school, and the women on the team are looking to get the same recognition as other sports teams on campus.
Women athletes from around the world have found their way to Bluefield College’s women’s tennis program. Farah Schweers is a undefeated senior from Neukirchen-Vluyn, Germany. Schweers has played for the women’s tennis team for the past three years.
“My teammates are all very loving and including, as well as being so close with the boys team,” Schweers said. “I know I can ask any of my teammates for help, and they will try to help me as good as they can.”
As a senior, Schweers looks forward to having a crowd of fans at the home matches this spring. She believes the the tennis program “deserves more acknowledgment,” and she encourages Bluefield College students and fans to support the team.
“Come and support the tennis team when there are matches,” Schweers said. “We are having home matches and love being supported, too.”
Kassidy Brown, a junior from Afton, TN, is beginning her second year on the Bluefield College women’s tennis team. Despite not being able to play last season due to COVID-19, Brown made the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) All-Academic team.
Since she joined the program, Brown feels the tennis team doesn’t get the recognition it deserves compared to other sports teams at Bluefield College.
“For example, we get last pick on time in the weight room,” Brown said. “We also don’t get many fans that come to our matches, because they are not promoted enough.”
For every collegiate sport, fans are a big supporting factor in a team’s motivation. For the women’s tennis team, a crowd full of excitement and school pride is vital to the success of their season.
“Having fans gives us more energy, like with any other sport,” Brown said. “We feed off the energy the fans give, and we really love when people come support us.”
Head coach Kevin Bowers joined the tennis program in 2011 as an assistant coach, and was promoted to head coach in 2016. He has made a huge impact on the tennis program and hopes to see another successful season this spring with even more students supporting the Lady Rams tennis team.
