Bluestone Review: A Place to Be Published

Sport Management • 2019

Bluefield College students who publish the school’s annual literary magazine, The Bluestone Review, are inviting other students, faculty, staff, and the community to contribute to this year’s publication.

Professor Rob Merritt, faculty advisor for the Review, said they are looking for artists of all kinds as the publication is a platform for students and others to express their work.

“We would like people in the community as well as college students to be submitting their work,” Dr. Merritt said “We’re looking for fiction, poetry, non-fiction, photography, art work, song lyrics, rap lyrics — basically any kind of creative work.”

Published every spring for the past 27 years, the 2020 Bluestone Review will be unveiled at an event for contributors. The gathering will take place after the printing of the magazine, and it will allow the artists to show their works or read their selections that have been published.

Dr. Merritt said he looks forward to the Bluestone Review debut every year. He said he genuinely enjoys the art and works that people share with each other.

“I do really like the reception” Dr. Merritt said about the unveiling event. “We have refreshments and music. For example, we had the Bluefield College Jazz Band play for the event last year. It was a great time.”

Dr. Merritt added that the event and The Bluestone Review are a great opportunity for people to express themselves while not worrying about being judged by others.

“People get to meet each other, and sometimes as young people who have never been published before you get to see their excitement and accomplished feeling.” Dr. Merritt said.

Though Dr. Merritt said he would love for the majority of the works in the Bluestone Review be contributed by Bluefield College students, he would also like to see contributions from the surrounding community.

“It feels really good to support the community,” he said, “and to see how many people are artistically inclined.”

Prospective contributors must submit their works by January 31, 2020 to be eligible for publication. Works may be submitted by email to bluestone@bluefield.edu or by postal mail to Bluefield College, The Bluestone Review, 3000 College Drive, Box #168, Bluefield, VA 24605.
