Slavery In Black and White
Bluefield College professor Dr. Lewis Brogdon presented a viewing of a documentary titled “Slavery in Black and White” at Harman Chapel on Sunday, September 22.
The event began with a potluck dinner for participants and included a discussion following the documentary featuring Dr. Brogdon, author of “Slavery in Black and White,” Pastor Travis Lowe, and Bishop Fred Brown. Lowe and Brown are local ministers who serve at churches in Bluefield, West Virginia.
“I have worked with Brown for over 20 years,” Dr. Brogdon said, “and Lowe took a class at BC last year that I taught on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We have been friends for a few years. Both are tremendous leaders.”
A number of Bluefield College students and faculty attended the event, along with guests from across the region. “We (had) people from the community and guests from places like Atlanta Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Roanoke Virginia,” Dr. Brogdon said.
Dr. Brogdon said he created the documentary as part of his work as a professor and dean at Bluefield College – a college, he added, that is committed to producing servant leaders to transform the world.
“We fulfill this mission by educating students, but also through the scholarship of professors,” Dr. Brogdon said. “This documentary tells some of the story of the church’s role in this history and steps that can be taken to address the injustices linked to slavery in America.”
In addition to presenting “Slavery in Black and White” at Bluefield College, Dr. Brogdon offered his documentary at the Appalachian College Association’s Annual Conference in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, on September 21.
