What to Do with Your Summer Break

Communication • 2020

With 2018-2019 classes coming to an end at Bluefield College, most students will be returning to their hometowns and embarking on new endeavors during the three-month summer break.

Some students will be working or taking summer classes or internships, while others may be traveling or visiting family and friends. On the other hand, lots of students may be unsure of their plans for the summer. With that in mind, here are a few ideas for students to consider to occupy their time during summer break.

If you plan to stay here or near Bluefield this summer, there are many attractions to visit in the surrounding area. There are several well-known places to venture within an acceptable distance. For starters, grab some friends and head over to Wynne Peak. If you love to hike, The Peak is perfect. Make sure to stay hydrated and wear proper clothing for the trip. It is a fairly steep trek up the mountain leading you to the tip-top of Easter River Mountain. Once at the top, you are treated with a panoramic view of Tazewell County.

About an hour away from campus is a waterfall in Giles County, Virginia, called The Cascades. The Cascades is a 66-foot waterfall located in the Jefferson National Forest. The trail to the waterfall is for hiking only. There are no bikes allowed. Make sure to dress appropriately for the hike and the weather, and be sure to bring $3 for parking at the head of the trail.

If you’d like to earn money this summer, put your resume out there and see what jobs you can find. Nothing builds character like work, and nothing is more assuring than having money in your pocket. There are lots of part-time, seasonal jobs in your area. What you do with your money is up to you. Catch a baseball game with some friends, go to a drive-in, or maybe help mom with the summer groceries.

Whatever you decide to do, use your time wisely this summer break. Make new memories while earning some money.
