Recital Marks End of Successful College Career for Moore

Graphic Communication • 2019

Bluefield College senior Hayley Moore performed her senior flute recital on March 26 — one of the milestone events marking the culmination of a successful college career for the BC double major.

Originally from Flint, MI, Moore came to Bluefield College from Patrick County, VA, where she attended high school and played in the band. In fact, she said she chose BC because of the influence of her high school band director, Joe Whitt, who graduated from the Bluefield College music program in 2014. Whitt invited Dr. Charles Priest, associate professor and chair of the BC Department of Music, to come to a Patrick County High School band camp. Hayley said she and Dr. Priest talked about Harry Potter and reading and the Bluefield College music program.

“I toured the campus, and I ended up deciding on BC after talking with Bekah Ivester (a 2017 Bluefield College alumna who was a music major at the time),” Moore said. A BC ambassador as a student, Ivester actually gave Moore her BC tour. Like Moore, Ivester loved music and played the flute. Moore said she said nice things about the Music Department, the small class sizes, and the caring professors. That was all Moore needed to hear to confirm her decision to attend BC.

Now, four years later and on the verge of earning her bachelor’s degree in music, Moore performed her senior recital as part of her requirements for her major. She played flute, an instrument she has played for the past 10 years. She performed four different pieces of music and was accompanied on piano by Alandra Blume Hinkle, a 2014 BC music alumna.

“I wasn’t really that nervous,” said Moore about performing her senior recital. “I was just excited to get it over with and relax after all of the work I’ve put in. It was more relieving than anything.”

In addition to music, Moore majors in English. In fact, she is one of the editors of The Bluestone Review, a BC student-produced literary magazine with writings and artwork from students and local residents. She is also a writer for the student newspaper, The Rampage

In addition, Moore is an Honors student and a member of both Alpha Chi and Sigma Tau Delta. She has been published in The Bluestone Review , is a work-study student for the Music Department, and also works at GameStop as a freelance editor.

“I mostly play video games — like Assigns Creeds, Kingdom Hearts, and Dragon Age — and write both music and lore for games in my spare time.” said Moore. “I haven’t won any awards here at BC, but I have been recognized for the President’s List (for earning a 3.9 to 4.0 grade point average) every semester that I have been here at Bluefield.”

After college, Moore said she hopes to work as an editor and eventually write either story or music for video games.
