Football 101

Graphic Communication • 2020

Just what is a “bootleg” or a “blitz,” and what’s the difference between a halfback and a fullback? Or when is the best time to call a Cover 2, nickel or prevent defense? Not sure about the answer to these questions, or simply want to know more about the basics and inner-workings of football, then sign up now for “Football 101,” a course offered this spring though Bluefield College’s Fine Arts Community School (FACS).

Designed to help any football enthusiasts increase their knowledge of the sport, “Football 101” will be taught by the Bluefield College football team and will feature instruction in all the basics of football, including offense, defense, and special teams.

“A lot of times people come to the games and they have questions about what they are seeing and what is going on in the game,” said Dewey Lusk, head coach of the Rams football team. “This class will help teach the basics, like what goes into making a call on offense or defense.”

Anyone in the community, ages 13 and up, are invited to participate in the class. The cost of the course is just a one-time fee of $32, and the class will be taught by various members of the Rams football coaching staff. The course will also provide a look into BC football athletic facilities.

The class will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 6 at Mitchell Stadium, located on Stadium Drive. Instruction will also take place at the BC football facility at 205 North Street, and lunch will be provided as part of the class in the BC dining hall in Shott Hall on the main campus. Participants must have transportation to all three locations.

With this class you will also be able to interact with players on the field during an actual spring practice.

This is an opportunity to see some of the things you will be learning about executed up close. Coach Lusk explained that, “We are going to give people a chance to be down on the field and stand at the different drill stations.”

Coach Lusk said the course will be a unique opportunity for football fans to have questions about the sport answered by the Rams football coaching staff.

“I want to emphasize that you can come out and ask questions about anything,” Coach Lusk said. “There are no dumb questions.”
