BC Student-Athletes Named Champions of Character
Bluefield College has been named a Champions of Character institution by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
Built on five core values, the Champions of Character program is designed to instill in student-athletes a desire to demonstrate integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership, both on and off the field of competition.
“The five core values go well beyond the playing field to the daily decisions of our youth,” said the NAIA. “These character values help young people — and those associated with their development — make good choices in all aspects of their life and reflect the true spirit of competition.”
According to the NAIA, member institutions, like Bluefield College, are measured on a demonstrated commitment to Champions of Character. Student-athletes earn points in character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition, and character promotion. Institutions also earn points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and minimal ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
Bluefield College earned the Silver Champions of Character Award this year, a level higher than the Bronze Award the school received the last few years.
“We do a lot of community service, and our students do well in the classroom,” said Bob Redd, BC’s sports information director. “We hope to continue to reach that Gold level.”
