Coach Rod White Continues Family Coaching Tradition
Bluefield College football coach Rod White is continuing a family tradition as he serves as the defensive backs coach for the Rams football team.
“I am the son of a coach,” said Coach White. “My father coached at Edmondson and Dunbar high schools where he was on staff for one of their basketball national championships.”
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, White attended and played football at Mount Saint Joseph High School before moving on to play football at the collegiate level. He finished his college career at West Liberty University in West Virginia.
“Once my college career was over, I chased the dream of playing pro ball, but I didn’t have a plan of what to do during the process besides training,” said White. “So, when the summer came, I decided to start coaching, which is what I was going to do ultimately anyway.”
After reaching out to multiple schools regarding coaching vacancies, White heard back from Coach Dewey Lusk, who at that time was coaching at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Lusk invited White for an interview and later offered him a job coaching defensive backs.
“After my second season there, they decided to let us go,” said White about his short stint at UVA-Wise, “and I went on to be a defensive assistant at Towson University.”
White spent a year at Towson before hearing again from Coach Lusk, who had made his way to Bluefield College to serve as the Rams head coach. Lusk invited White to join his staff again, this time at Bluefield. Now in his second year at BC, he says he is enjoying where he is and what he is doing.
“I enjoy the game,” said White, “the game planning, the player development, and being able to scheme up the other teams.”
