Bluefield College Begins Work on New Strategic Plan
Bluefield College leaders are putting together a new strategic plan with goals and objectives for the school’s growth over the next five years.
Dr. Thomas Brewster, dean and associate professor of the School of Education, is leading the process as chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. Joining Dr. Brewster on the planning committee are representatives from various areas of the BC family, including Josh Arnold, associate vice president for student development; David Kirk, trustee; Erika Bell, head athletic trainer; Dr. David Hite, chair and professor of the Caudill School of Business; Hannah Ingo, Dr. Patricia Neely, dean of online and distance education; and Dr. Maria Zalduondo, associate professor of languages and director of global education.
The committee will be seeking input from the college community to develop the plan in the beginning stages and to ensure that feedback is appropriately reflected as the plan unfolds.
“It is important to have a strategic plan, because it can help improve upon the vision, mission and core values of the college,” said Dr. Brewster.
Dr. Brewster added that the ultimate goal is to make experiences even better for students. He said that every decision they make will support students in their learning environment.
“Planning for the future helps benefit the college, community, and helps improve campus experiences,” he said. “Planning ahead helps everyone overall have a great experience.”
As part of the preliminary planning process, the committee surveyed various Bluefield College constituents. Out of 278 respondents, the largest group represented were students (109) and employees (106). The remaining 63 were made up of alumni, trustees/former trustees, and donors/friends. The survey determined that 57 percent of respondents believe the BC mission as defined is “very effective” or “extremely effective,” followed by 31 percent who believe it is “somewhat effective.” The BC mission currently states that, “Bluefield College is an inclusive Christ-centered learning community developing transformational servant leaders.”
Regarding BC’s core values, the survey determined that 64 percent contend they are “very effective” or “extremely effective,” while 25 percent say they are “somewhat effective.” Bluefield College is currently guided by the following four core values:
“1) We are a community committed to Christ-centered learning and affirm our Baptist partnerships. 2) We are a community committed to academic excellence and life-long inquiry through the liberal arts and professional studies. 3) We are a community characterized by integrity, mutual respect, support and encouragement. 4) We are a compassionate, globally-minded community that serves to transform the world.”
The first draft of the new strategic plan is scheduled to be submitted to college leadership on March 1, 2019, and will go before the Board of Trustees in April 2019.
