BC’s Devon Jackson Making a Difference on and off the Field
When you imagine a student who embodies leadership and passion or a person who knows how to brighten a room, you might just think of Bluefield College senior Devon Jackson.
Born in Hawaii, but raised in Newport News, VA, Jackson attended Atlee High School. After graduating from Atlee, he attended Jireh Preparatory Academy in Matthews, NC, in an effort to improve his football skills to play at the collegiate level.
“It was rough,” said Jackson about his time at the prep school. “We had a three-room apartment with six guys living in it. We always traveled for games on the day of, and we only stayed in a hotel once, and they only provided food for us after games.”
After a year at Jireh, Jackson came to Bluefield College to play football and to major in sports medicine, where he hopes to someday help people become healthier and stay in shape.
“Seeing people transform their bodies interests me,” said Jackson about his major and career choice.
Since joining the Rams football program in the fall of 2015, Jackson has had a huge impact on the team. In fact, he is currently the starting safety on defense and has been having a productive year despite battling injuries throughout his career.
Jackson demonstrated his greatest resiliency bouncing back from a broken ankle suffered during his sophomore season. Determined to come back stronger than ever after the ankle injury, Jackson had arguably his best season as a Ram the very next year.
Jackson has set a great example off the field, as well, maintaining a 3.2 grade point average in the classroom and serving as a member of the Black Student Alliance. He also participates in the Hunger Challenge, an annual charity event sponsored by the football team, and volunteers his time to read to kids in local elementary and secondary schools.
