Suggestions for What to do During Winter Break

Graphic Communication • 2020

As the fall 2018 semester comes to an end, students are approaching winter break and a much-needed reprieve from classes and studying.

But what else will students do during their time off? Below are a few suggestions offered by fellow BC students for how to best take advantage of the time away.

Spend Time with Family

The Christmas and New Year holidays are always a good time to connect with family, especially those you don’t often have time to see. Make a point to stop by family members’ houses and spend time with them during the holidays.

Get Involved in Outdoor Winter Activities

Bluefield College junior Logan Hinnant suggests trying snowboarding during the break, while fellow junior Alan Bowen encourages students to try skiing. With the snow that winter typically provides during break, students might also consider sledding or a fun snowball fight.

Go on a Shopping Spree

It wouldn’t be Christmas break without Christmas shopping. Take advantage of the time off from classes and studying to go shopping for those last-minute Christmas gifts. After Christmas, you might also take some of that Christmas money and spend it on yourself.

Work and Save Money

BC junior Damarcus Wimbush offers a more responsible suggestion for students. He said students could use the extra time to work and save money.

“Work over the break while you have the time,” said Wimbush, “so you can come back from break with some money in your pocket for the spring.”

Eat a Lot of Food

Who doesn’t love food? And with Christmas right around the corner, you can almost smell the Christmas dinner. Take advantage of Christmas dinner and all the treats and sweets that go along with the Christmas holiday, and eat a lot of good food during the break. Just make sure you start to shed off those additional pounds after New Year’s.

Just Relax

With all the built-up stress from the semester and final exams, not to mention everything else life throws at students, the holiday break will be a great opportunity to relax. Junior Andre “Dre” Evans provides an added tip to this suggestion. In addition to relaxing, he encourages students to catch up on sleep during the break.

Whatever you decide to do for winter break, just make sure you enjoy it responsibly and have fun.
